Talking to Our Children

September 28, 2001

“As we continue to cope with events of September 11th, we must remember that this tragedy affects everyone in our society, including our children.  It is important that we as parents talk to our kids about what happened and reassure them that they are secure.  I encourage parents to turn off the TV and let your children talk about their thoughts and fears about what happened.  And remember that it’s not just young children that need reassurance; teenagers need our support, too.  For more information and tips on how you can talk to your children, feel free to visit our website at www.house.gov/ross.

“This week, I visited junior high and high school civics and government classes in the Fourth District to speak with students about the terrorist attacks.  They, like the rest of us, need to know what Congress, the President, and our government are doing in response to the attacks and how it affects their lives.  In speaking to these students, I tried to make sure that they understand what happened, to let them know that they can feel safe to move on with their normal activities, and to listen to their comments about this challenge facing our nation.

“On Monday, I will be traveling with a delegation of House members from across the country to New York City to see first hand the damage and ongoing recovery efforts at the World Trade Center site.  I think it’s important to express the support of the people of south Arkansas to those on the front lines in the wake of this devastation.  This was something that affected not only New Yorkers, but people from across America and around the world.  I also think it’s critical that we in Congress have a full and first hand understanding of the magnitude of these attacks as we work to make important decisions that will shape the military and economic security of this nation and the world for years to come.  We owe it to the victims, to the rescue and recovery workers, to our children and grandchildren, and to all Americans to make the right decisions.”
