Visiting Ground Zero at World Trade Center Site

October 2, 2001

“On Monday, October 1st, I joined a bipartisan congressional delegation in traveling to New York City to visit ground zero at the World Trade Center site to offer America’s support for the families of the victims and for the ongoing rescue and recovery efforts.  During the visit, we met with Governor Pataki and Mayor Giuliani as well as officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“Words simply cannot describe the amount of devastation at the World Trade Center site and the surrounding area.  Windows of buildings over a block away have been blown out.  Over 6000 people are among the missing or dead, including 343 firefighters and 80 police officers.  Many of the rescue workers have lost a family member or friend in the attack, yet they continue to work tirelessly to remove the wreckage and the remains of those who died.

“I was saddened and angered at the destruction that I witnessed, wrought by these evil terrorists, but I was equally proud to see the resolve of the workers at ground zero and all the people of New York, to see American flags flying throughout the city as they are in towns across America.  The visit strengthened our commitment as members of Congress that we must, and we will, stomp out the roots of terrorism in this country and, yes, throughout the world.
