Dismantling the Financial Infrastructure of Global Terrorism

October 3, 2001

“On Wednesday, the Financial Services Committee in the House of Representatives heard testimony from Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill and Attorney General John Ashcroft on dismantling the financial infrastructure of global terrorism.  As a member of the committee, I am pleased to play an active role in a bipartisan effort to cripple the financial resources of those who support and assist terrorist networks across the globe.

“In the near future, the Financial Services Committee will be introducing the Financial Anti-Terrorism Act, which I will be co-sponsoring, in an effort to do just that.  This legislation will attack the financial infrastructure of terrorists; it will combat international money laundering; and it will facilitate information and cooperation between the government and the financial services industries.  Financial institutions must be enlisted in the fight against global terrorism, and we must crack down on countries that do not cooperate with the United States on money laundering in their countries.  I look forward to working with the committee and other members of Congress to see that this measure is quickly enacted, so we can truly dry up the funding for these horrible terrorists and their attacks.”
