Legislative Update by Congressman Mike Ross
Honoring Our Veterans

November 8, 2002

This week we as a nation exercised one of our fundamental freedoms in voting in the Midterm Election.  Whether it was a vote for your congressman, your alderman, or issues affecting your community, it was your vote to cast, and that is a precious thing.

It may be a coincidence that Election Day falls so close to Veterans’ Day, but I think it provides a powerful reminder.

On this Veterans’ Day Weekend, we must pause to remember those who have fought so hard, giving their time, their strength, and even their lives to protect our rights and freedoms like the one we exercised on Tuesday.  There is not one person among us who does not have a veteran in his or her life – whether it’s someone in our neighborhood, or even in our household.  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our men and women in uniform who have served and defended our country so bravely.

I’d also like to invite you to join in celebrating this Veterans’ Day.  Find out how your community is paying tribute to local veterans, and get involved.  Fly your flag at your home to show support for our troops still stationed overseas in the fight against terrorism.  But at the very least, seek out that father, grandfather, or neighbor who served in our armed forces, and simply say, “Thank you.”
