Affordable Housing for South Arkansas

August 17, 2001

Today, the homeownership rate in America is the highest it’s ever been.  However, in south Arkansas too many families are still struggling to find adequate, affordable housing.

As your United States Congressman, I want to be an advocate for find ways to find affordable housing for those who need it.  This week, I hosted a roundtable discussion on affordable housing issues in Pine Bluff.  I am pleased that we are continuing to work to help families afford adequate housing.  And, also this week, I visited federal housing projects and met with representatives of the Housing Authorities at Camden and Lake Village.  I plan to continue working with these agencies to support their efforts to provide affordable housing for low-income families.

As a member of the Committee on Financial Services in the United States House of Representatives, I have been able to work on a number of housing related bills that fall under the jurisdiction of the committee.  In fact, I am a cosponsor of a bill that would increase the mortgage loan limits under the National Housing Act for multifamily housing mortgage insurance, which would benefit low-to-moderate income and displaced families as well as the elderly.

For many people in south Arkansas and across America, owning a home is a lifelong dream.   I am committed to working to help them achieve that dream.
