Yesterday the greatest question was decided which ever was debated
in America; and a greater perhaps never was, nor will be, decided among
men.” There is no better phrase that encapsulates the freedom Americans
experienced when our colonies unanimously endorsed the Declaration of Independence
than those very words spoken by John Adams -- one of our nation's most
prolific forefathers.
This Independence Day we gather with our family and friends to celebrate
the Declaration of Independence that the Continental Congress signed into
law 228 years ago. On this day we honor the incredible vision, foresight,
and courage our Founders possessed as they boldly declared democracy and
freedom for all Americans. And we honor the sacrifice our soldiers made
to secure our destiny.
As we celebrate our America's birthday, our world is celebrating the
birth of another democratic nation - the country of Iraq. This week, Coalition
Provisional Authority Chief Paul Bremer handed over the government of Iraq
to the people of Iraq. For the first time ever, the Iraqi citizens are
on their way to enjoying the freedoms of life, liberty, and equality that
all democratic nations share today.
But we must be supportive and patient as the Iraqi citizens work toward
establishing a solid, functional, democratic government. There is no question
the road to freedom for the people of Iraq will be a rocky road at best.
But let us keep in mind that America's path to independence was no easy
feat either.
On this July Fourth, let us all remember those who cannot be with us
on our own soil because they are serving to protect our freedoms and secure
the freedoms of others. These brave men and women are in our hearts and
prayers. For not only America - but the world - will forever remember their
brave and patriotic spirit. |
