Legislative Update by Congressman Mike Ross

New Partnership for America’s Future

October 1, 2004

Recently, House Democrats introduced a new plan for the future of America that details six core values for a strong and secure middle class.  These values include prosperity, national security, fairness, opportunity, community and accountability, and within each value lies an agenda that I am confident will take this country in a new direction.

This plan will create jobs by enacting a middle class tax relief, investing in transportation and infrastructure, supporting small manufacturers, enacting tax incentives to create jobs, and extending unemployment insurance.  This plan keeps our jobs here at home by ending tax breaks for companies sending jobs overseas and rewards companies that create jobs in the U.S. while investing in research and development to allow our job market to prosper.

Americans must be allowed to feel safe again.  This plan understands the importance of protecting our borders and revamps homeland security through common-sense practices.  We will integrate our intelligence systems, screen cargo coming into our ports, inspect all airline cargo and fully fund our first responders.  While these elements sound simple, they are neglected nationwide and must be implemented sooner rather than later if we are to protect ourselves from future attacks on our soil.

This plan takes care of those who fought for our freedom by ending the disabled veterans tax and the widow’s tax, provides veterans with the health care they desperately need and deserve, extends TRICARE benefits to the National Guard and Reserves, provides our men and women with the equipment they need to do their jobs as safely as possible, makes combat increase permanent and gives bonuses to soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

It is time this nation gets back on track.  We must reexamine our priorities and create economic opportunities for the unemployed and make healthcare accessible and affordable for all Americans. We must once again invest in education and infrastructure.  We must do everything in our power to protect America from terrorist attacks by investing in homeland security.  We must take this country in a new direction to preserve equal opportunity, accountability and a sense of community.  I am optimistic about the future of our great country.  I believe this plan truly reflects America's priorities and values and puts our children and families first again.
