Tech Summit 2005

A New Lock

Replacement of the Chickamauga Lock on the Tennessee River commenced as the first drill penetrated the soil in an elaborate ceremony today in the presence of elected and appointed officials who have been instrumental to progress along the way.

Secret City Festival

In a day filled with excitement and anticipation, Zach helped launch Oak Ridge’s Secret City Festival and usher in all the week’s activities.

Fitness Events

With the health-related costs of obesity approaching $75 billion per year, Congressman Wamp is at the forefront of national and statewide efforts to promote exercise and living a healthy lifestyle.

President Bush Visits Oak Ridge

President George W. Bush spoke to nearly 200 lab employees and local officials at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on July 12, 2004 to share his plans to continue in the country's efforts to fight terror and keep America safe.

Congressman Wamp Visits Africa

Congressman Wamp spent 11 days in August, 2004 in East Africa and South Africa where he met with government officials on issues ranging from airport and port security to the AIDS crisis and the lack of water. Just like in East Tennessee, Zach connected to the people at the local level.

Homeland Security Field Briefing

Oak Ridge has developed exciting new technologies to combat the war on terrorism and  Chairman Hal Rogers (R-KY) came to the "Atomic City" to see and learn about some of this state of the art equipment.  Rogers is the Chairman of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, which I also serve on, as well as one of the most senior members of the Appropriations Committee.

Agriculture Meeting for Tennessee Farmers

The federal government's agriculture policies affect the livelihood of every farmer in East Tennessee. These hard working Americans need to know that Congress is listening to their needs and understands their concerns.  Congressman Wamp held a public meeting on April 25, 2003, at Walters State Community College in Morristown and heard from about 150 area farmers about the special needs of the agriculture community.

Veterans History Project

Motivated by a desire to honor our nation's war veterans for their service and to collect their stories and experiences while they are still among us, the United States Congress created the Veterans History Project.  Knowing that this and future generations of Americans have much to learn from those who served, Congressman Wamp has embraced this national effort.

Normandy Medal Presentation

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a United States Congressman is honoring veterans who have served our country in the Armed Forces of the United States.  It has been such a fantastic experience to meet World War II veterans throughout the district who served in the invasion of Normandy and honor them by presenting the Normandy Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty.

Chickamauga Lock Annual Forum

The Chickamauga Lock is vital to our nation and many important public and private interests throughout our region. Over time, the Lock has deteriorated from a phenomenon called "concrete growth" and requires constant repair.  Ultimately, we must replace the lock but the project will be very expensive and gaining approval in Congress for this complex proposal will be very difficult. This is why I have held an annual forum to give our "stakeholders" updates on the Lock and keep them working together.

National Prayer Breakfast

On Thursday, February 1, 2001, I served as the Chairman and master of ceremonies for the National Prayer Breakfast which was attended by representatives from 170 countries, including more than a dozen heads of state. This annual event has its roots in the years of World War II. In 1942, some of the leaders of the Senate began to discuss the national problems of the War and to pray together about them. Not long afterwards, a similar group formed in the House of Representatives. Out of these two groups, which met weekly, the National Prayer Breakfast eventually came to be.

Inauguration of President George W. Bush

After a hotly contested Presidential election, Americans came together to celebrate the Inauguration of the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, on Saturday, January 20, 2001. It was a real thrill and honor for me to be part of the ceremonies and visit with so many Tennesseeans who were in Washington, DC, for this historic event.
