SHUSTER’S BILL TO AWARD GOLD MEDAL TO FLIGHT 93 HEROES HAS MOMENTUM, 152 COSPONSORS

Washington, DC – Congressman Bill Shuster’s legislation to posthumously award a Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest honor, to the passengers and crew aboard United Flight 93 crossed a significant milestone: The bill has more than half of the 290 cosponsors necessary to be considered.

“Most reports confirm that Flight 93 was headed toward the Capitol, and their actions not only saved lives, possibly mine, but most importantly preserved our symbol of freedom and displayed the resilience of Americans to terrorists around the world,” said Shuster.

With 152 cosponsors, H.R. 5159 has considerable momentum.  The legislation was introduced by Congressman Shuster on April 6 with 21 original sponsors.  But while it has awaited action by the House Financial Services Committee, the bill has gained wide support.

The Congressional Gold Medal has been awarded since 1776.  According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), this medal is considered the most distinguished award from Congress.  Gold Medals were initially presented to military leaders, but have also been given to such diverse individuals as Sir Winston Churchill, Bob Hope and many more as a public expression of gratitude by Congress for exceptional contributions to America.

“These heroes fought the first counter attack in today’s War on Terror,” said Shuster.  “On that day they earned their place in American history because of their decision to act.  They deserve to be honored with the Gold Medal just like other recipients have, including George Washington, John Paul Jones, General Colin Powell, Pope John Paul, Ronald Reagan and many more.”

“We need to cross a high-hurdle of 290 cosponsors to move this legislation forward,” said Shuster.  “We are more than halfway there, and our progress has been tremendous.”
