Statement by Congressman
Shays' Office Regarding Report by the New Republic
Today the New Republic published a story regarding an error
in reporting a trip taken by Congressman Shays in 2003. Following
is a statement by Shays' chief of staff, Betsy Hawkings:
"Two disclosure forms are required when members travel
at the expense of an outside entity.
"The first -- the more detailed Travel Disclosure Form
-- was filed with the Clerk of the House by Shays' Subcommittee
on time as required. This is a public document that has also
been provided to the New Republic.
"However, our office erred in failing to realize this
trip should also have been reported on Congressman Shays'
2003 Financial Disclosure Form. As soon as we learned of this
mistake, which was the result of simple human staff error,
we corrected it immediately."
