Morton Grove Fire Department to Receive $56,000 in Federal Grant Funds

Morton Grove Champion

January 29, 2004

The Morton Grove Fire Department has been informed that it will receive approximately $56,000 in federal grant funds.

The money will be used to purchase and install a vehicle exhaust extraction system at both village fire stations.

Capt. Bill Porter took the lead role on behalf of the department to bring the grant request to successful resolution. This award is part of the federally funded Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The federal Office of Domestic Preparedness administers the program through the direction of Congress and representatives that continue to be advocates of the fare service, including U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-9th.

The vehicle exhaust extraction system is designed to capture and evacuate from the fire station, 100 percent of a fire apparatus' exhaust emissions produced when the vehicle is running inside the building. The extrication system is also equipped with an EPA approved particulate emission filter that will reduce up to 99 percent of the diesel exhaust being evacuated to the atmosphere. The system complies with the EPA Clean Air Act and will help protect firefighters, station visitors and fire station neighbors from any airborne exposure to diesel exhaust products.

The exhaust systems will be installed at both village fire stations within the year. Fire Station 4 is located at 6250 Lincoln Ave. and Station 5 is at 8954 Shermer.
