Leaders Agree to Work Together on Great
Lakes
December 03, 2004
CHICAGO (AP) -- Dozens of state and federal leaders meeting
in Chicago today have agreed to collaborate on a long-term plan to protect and
preserve the Great Lakes.
The officials signed a declaration of their support for the plan.
Illinois Congressman Rahm Emanuel says cleaning up the Great Lakes is important
and more funding is still needed.
And U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky cautioned that the collaboration
shouldn’t turn into just another study of how to fix the Great Lakes. She says
it’s time to act.
E-P-A chief Michael Leavitt says cooperation like this is messy and hard to do
but necessary. And he says it’s time to pick up the pace when it comes to Great
Lakes clean-up.
