U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Chicago Democrat, is feeling her way out
into the new suburban aspects of her district.
In early January, Schakowsky's legislative territory will break into
Des Plaines and Park Ridge, meaning a whole new set of issues are on her
plate. First stop, Des Plaines seniors.
The congresswoman recently stopped into the Des Plaines Community Senior
Center, 515 E. Thacker St., and Andy's restaurant, 1515 E. Oakton St. The
two are both hot spots for the local senior community.
Schakowsky spokeswoman Nadeam Elshami said the congresswoman made the
senior center a high priority stop because health care issues are a main
agenda item for her.
"The No. 1 issue that seniors have been talking about are the high costs
of prescription drugs," Elshami said. "We don't want to just lower prescription
drug costs, but provide these seniors with what they've been promised all
along- a prescription drug benefit through Medicare."
Elshami said the congresswoman is well-versed in local issues and will
continue to make visits to local community venues to listen to the priorities
of her new constituents.
