The campaign for the 9th Congressional District pits incumbent Democrat
Janice Schakowsky of Chicago against Republican Nicholas Duric, an attorney
and Park Ridge Republican. The district covers eastern Des Plaines and stretches
east and south to take in parts or most of Park Ridge, Morton Grove, Niles,
Skokie, Evanston, Lincolnwood and the Chicago lakefront extending south
almost to Fullerton Avenue.Duric says his views more closely match the
district's, and we suspect that the incumbent's views are to the left of
those held by many constituents on the district's western edge. Moreover,
we suspect that her domestic spending plans, if all adopted, would badly
exacerbate budget deficits.Nonetheless, Schakowsky is endorsed on the D!
aily Herald's recognition that her views fit well with much of the district
and that her experience in Congress and, earlier, in the General Assembly,
make her an effective advocate for constituents.Duric, for his part, merits
commendation for offering thoughtful positions on a wide range of national
policy issues.
