We would like to report to the people of the Frankfort area that the
first celebration of "Frankfort's Women's Equality Day" was a spectacular
success.
Aug. 26, the date that commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment
giving women the vote, is an opportunity for women to celebrate the courage
of suffragists and other women in American history who championed women's
rights. Also, it is an opportunity for women to meet and discuss the issues
of today.
More than 100 women of the area met and were addressed by three champions
of women's causes. Jan Gould, retiring Will County clerk, spoke about the
power of women in the electoral process. Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky,
9th District, spoke about the power of women in progressive causes which
support women and families and Dr. Barbara Soltes, associate professor,
Rush-St. Luke's Hospital, spoke about the need for women to be knowledgeable
about ovarian cancer.
More than $1,300 was raised in a free-will donation to help in the
fight of this insidious disease.
We also would like to say thank you to the other members of our committee
- Marian Glunz, Doris Sangmeister, Judy Tyler, Arlene Santoro, Doris Knight,
Betty Strong and Marge Friedman and also the Frankfort Area Historical
Society - for sponsoring this event.
We also wish to acknowledge Enrico's Restaurant, Balloons With a Twist,
and Mary Todd's Restaurant. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
Mark your calendars. Join us on Aug. 26, 2003, for the annual celebration
of women and their civil rights.
