Immigration
Workshop Promises a Safe Place
Chicago Tribune
Oct. 19th, 2003
SKOKIE - A Skokie news release
for an immigration workshop contains a line that Skokie village attorney J.
Patrick Hanley describes as "code."
The release states: "The workshop will be a safe environment for all immigrants
regardless of status."
In other words, Hanley said, "Nobody's going to be arrested. The idea was this
will be a friendly environment."
In Skokie, home to 70 ethnic groups, elected officials said they have heard no
end to immigration woes from people seeking citizenship, visas, legal residency,
family visits from abroad and more.
"Nearly 70 percent of the constituent work we do is immigration-related," said
Nadeam Elshami, spokesman to Rep. Jan
Schakowsky (D-Ill.).
U.S. immigration officials will explain procedures and answer questions at the
workshop.
The workshop will be held Thursday (Oct.
23rd) at 6:30 p.m. in the Oakton Community Center, 4701 Oakton St., Skokie.
