SCHAKOWSKY WELCOMES SENIORS TO NEW APARTMENTS IN ROGERS PARK

CHICAGO, IL --  U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today welcomed Chicago area seniors to the grand opening of the Morse Senior Apartments in the Rogers Park neighborhood.  Schakowsky, who went to Sullivan High School and shopped and dined on Morse Avenue in her youth, applauded the effort of all those involved in this project that will give seniors a safe and affordable place to live.

The apartment building located on 1528 W. Morse underwent a $7 million senior housing renovation project by the Urban Investment Trust. The building was gutted, and now contains 57 affordable units for seniors and an on-site health and wellness center staffed by Council for Jewish Elderly.  49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore, Community residents, organizations including the Rogers Park Community Council, and local police worked through the Community Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) to shut down the building and drive out criminal activities.  Since the building was shut down, crime in the area has dropped by 50%.

Schakowsky is a member of the House Banking subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity and has fought against attempts to cut housing programs nationwide. She has worked closely with a coalition of housing advocates, local officials, and community leaders to win victories for hard working families, seniors, and persons with disabilities.
