WASHINGTON,
D.C. – U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) today commended Representative
Danny K. Davis (D-IL), author of a Congressional Resolution stating that
problems facing the “United States Postal Service cannot be solved by drastic
reductions in service, reducing 6-day delivery, post office closings, diminishing
collective bargaining rights, or increasing postal rates…”
The
Resolution also calls on the USPS to defer any future rate increase requests
until 2002 at the earliest. Furthermore, the Resolution states that
the United States Postal Service should “redouble” efforts to eliminate
mismanagement and improve productivity.
“Postal
customers in the Chicago area do not want to pay the price for financial
problems at the United States Postal Service. While we are aware
that steps must be taken to address recent financial woes at the USPS,
Congress should send a clear message to all our constituents that we expect
the Postal Service to continue to meet the needs of consumers without cutting
Saturday service and unreasonable price hikes,” Schakowsky said.
“At
the same time we recognize the great demand that is placed every day on
the hard working men and women who deliver and process our mail.
That is why continued collective bargaining rights for postal employees
are non-negotiable,” Schakowsky added.
She
concluded, “I look forward to working with Representative Davis and my
colleagues on the Postal Caucus to meet those goals and to ensure that
needed capital projects throughout the country are funded without further
delay.” |
