Ross Announces $134,397 in FEMA Grants for 4th District Departments

(Washington, D.C.) Fourth District Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) announced Wednesday that fire departments in Montgomery, Hot Spring, Union, and Polk Counties have been approved for grants in the third round of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 2003 Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program.

“This is wonderful news for residents of these four counties,” Ross said.  “For many people living in these rural areas, volunteer firefighters serve as the first responder for any number of emergencies.   It is important that we find all the resources we can for our local firefighters so they can have the training and equipment needed to continue protecting lives and property.  Our rural firefighters do a great job with what they have to work with, but in order to respond to day-to-day calls and be prepared for larger emergencies; they need the added assistance these FEMA grants will provide.”

The Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety Program includes funding for training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, and modifications to fire stations and facilities.  Departments in the Fourth District receiving grant awards for Fire Operations and Firefighter Safety are as follows:

Sulphur & Laverna Volunteer Fire Department (Story) - $7,038
Magnet Cove Area Fire Protection Association (Malvern) - $40,644
Shady Grove Fire/Rescue (Mena) - $41,715

The Firefighting Vehicles Acquisition Program includes funding for pumpers, brush trucks, tankers, rescue, ambulances, quints, aerials, foam units, and fireboats.  Departments in the Fourth District receiving grant awards for Firefighting Vehicles are as follows:

Mount Holly Fire Department - $45,000

This is the third round of notifications for the 2003 program.  Further notifications are expected on a weekly basis for the next 12-15 months.
