Ross Statement on Military Action in Iraq

(Washington, D.C.) Fourth District Rep. Mike Ross (D-Ark.) this morning attended a classified security briefing with Secretary of the Army Thomas White, and issued the following statement in response to the start of military action in Iraq:

“This is a sobering moment for the American people and the world.  The attacks have begun, and our soldiers are now engaged in the mission to disarm Saddam Hussein and remove him from power.  He has refused to participate in a diplomatic and peaceful resolution.  He’s had 12 years, and he’s had five months, and now he’s had 48 hours to avoid this. The President has determined that military action is necessary, and we are now one team, united in one fight.

“This morning I was part of a delegation that met with the Secretary of the Army at the Pentagon.  He brought us up to speed on the latest developments in Iraq and the factors behind the President’s decision to strike.  I applaud the administration for keeping Members of Congress informed and involved in this process, and I will do my best to keep you informed as well.

“Earlier today, as the Iraqi army fired missiles aimed at targets in Kuwait, I was reassured after learning that our soldiers were protected by equipment like that assembled in East Camden.  To those workers, I am proud of your contribution to this effort, and I thank you for ensuring that our forces have the resources they need to win this fight.

“Among those executing this effort are many service members from our hometowns in Arkansas, and I have full confidence that they will be successful in their mission to protect and defend freedom.  We are deeply grateful for their patriotism, their courage and the sacrifices they have made.  I trust that as they perform their duties as members of our armed forces, they do so knowing that our thoughts and our prayers are with them and with their families here at home.”
