Pryce: Right to Vote Is
Safeguard of Freedom

Voting Rights Act Reauthorization Passes House

WASHINGTO N , DC – Congresswoman Deborah Pryce (R-Columbus) today hailed the passage of H.R. 9, the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006, which renews expiring provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

“The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a landmark piece of legislation that helped extend to all Americans the full promise of our founding principles,” Pryce said.  “Reauthorizing this important legislation is an opportunity for us to reiterate our commitment to these principles and rededicate ourselves to ensuring that all Americans fully enjoy their natural and constitutional rights.  The right to vote is an important safeguard of our freedoms, and denying it to any citizen is a grave injustice.”

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed to ensure that minority residents of states with a long history of discrimination could exercise their right to vote.  The reauthorization the House passed today renews expiring provisions for 25 years and updates the act by eliminating outdated provisions.
