Fossella, Golden
& Mirones Urge MTA to Maintain Local Express Bus Service
Lawmakers Protest Plan to Discontinue Weekend
Service on the X27 and X28

Congressman Vito Fossella, State Senator Marty Golden and
Assemblyman Matthew Mirones today called on the Metropolitan
Transportation Authority (MTA) to maintain weekend express bus
service on the X27 and X28 lines, serving the Bay
Ridge,
Dyker
Heights
and
Bensonhurst communities.
In a letter to Lawrence Reuter, President of NYC
Transit, the lawmakers protested plans to discontinue the service
now that the Manhattan Bridge Reconstruction Project has been
completed, which restored subway service to commuters on the
"R" and "N" trains.
“While we are certainly pleased that
Brooklyn
residents
again have access to subway service, it would be short-sighted and
counterproductive to discontinue weekend runs of the X27 and X28,”
the lawmakers said. “In the nearly two years since this service
was implemented, the X27 and X28 have emerged as a vital mass
transportation options for many New Yorkers, and in particular for
those senior citizens who are unable to use the subways. The buses
provide a direct, convenient and affordable link between
Manhattan
and
Brooklyn
,
encouraging residents to use mass transit instead of their cars.
With more people taking mass transit, the city as a whole benefits
through the reduction in cars driving on already congested local
roads and highways.
Fossella, Golden and Mirones said the local community
is already underserved by mass transit and reducing service further
would create a hardship for many residents.
“The people of Bay Ridge,
Dyker
Heights
and
Bensonhurst deserve to have a full complement of mass transit
options available to them,” the lawmakers said. “It is wrong to
restore subway service and, at the very same time, eliminate bus
service for the thousands of people who live and work in these
communities. We urge the MTA to reconsider its plan and maintain
full weekend service on the X27 and x28 lines.”
