Etheridge Announces $12.8 Million for N.C. Transportation Projects

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today announced that he has secured $12.8 million in federal funding for transportation projects in North Carolina's 2nd Congressional District. The funding was authorized in a federal highway construction bill named Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users and will be distributed over six years.

"This is great news for the 2nd District," Etheridge said. "These federal transportation funds will provide jobs and economic growth for North Carolina. By improving our transportation infrastructure, we will allow for businesses to improve the flow of goods through the area, and families will be able to travel on safe, modern roads. The 2nd District will be an even better place to live, work, and raise a family."

The following projects requested by Etheridge were included in the bill:

  1. $800,000 million to install an Intelligence Transportation System on the U.S. 70 Clayton Bypass in Wake and Johnston counties.
  2. $3.2 million to widen U.S. 401 to a multilane facility from Raleigh to Fayetteville.
  3. $2.4 million to widen U.S. 401 to multiple lanes from Wake County to Louisburg.
  4. $800,000 to construct a greenway from a park on Carthage Street in downtown Sanford five miles to the southern boundary of the Endor Iron Furnace site.
  5. $1.6 million for two sections of greenway along the Neuse River from the Wake/Johnston county line to the Town of Clayton and from NC 42 near Clayton to the Town of Smithfield.
  6. $4 million to improve and extend S.R. 1923 (Booker Dairy Road) from U.S. 70 Business to U.S. 301 in Smithfield with a new crossing of the Neuse River.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 412-8 and the Senate is expected to pass it later today. The President has said that he will sign the bill into law.
