Etheridge Supports Legislation to Tighten Border Security

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington), a member of the U.S. House Select Committee on Homeland Security, is working to pass legislation that would tighten security at the nation's borders, preventing the flow of terrorists across the border. The Secure Borders Act would deploy infrastructure, personnel and technology to regulate the nation's borders.

"This legislation makes good, common sense to keep our hometowns and our homeland safe," Etheridge said. "The 2,000 miles of our southern border remain largely unprotected, an opening for terrorists more than three years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Congress should act on these responsible measures without further delay. The Congressional leadership has been asleep at the switch for far too long."

The legislation would:

  • Create a $1 billion infrastructure investment fund;
  • Double the numbers of law enforcement at and between the ports of entry;
  • Deploy technology to monitor the entire border 24 hours a day;
  • Screen all cargo trucks crossing the Southern Border for WMD;
  • Expand Detention and Removal Operations; and
  • Require Spanish and other specialized training for inspectors.
