On National Day of Prayer, Etheridge Urges Constituents to Pray for Troops

WASHINGTON - Today people across the nation will once again mark the National Day of Prayer with quiet moments of prayer and reflection. U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) urged North Carolinians to mark this year's National Day of Prayer by including our nation's troops in their thoughts and prayers.

"As our troops face daily danger in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world, it is fitting that we remember them on this National Day of Prayer," Etheridge said. "Our nation's troops and their families are serving our country and making great personal sacrifices in the name of honor and duty. This day and everyday we should remember those fighting for their country and their family members."

In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.
