Etheridge to Select High School Junior to Serve as Page in House of Representatives

RALEIGH - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today announced an essay contest that he is sponsoring to select a high school junior from the 2nd Congressional District for nomination as a Congressional Page in the U.S. House of Representatives for the spring term. Juniors who live in the 2nd District who will be at least 16 years old by January 25th, who have at least a 3.0 academic grade point average and who are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents are invited to apply.

"I encourage all students who are eligible to serve as Pages to apply for this honor," Etheridge said. "Serving as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives is a wonderful experience that allows students to see government firsthand. I look forward to a bright young person from my District taking advantage of this opportunity."

Pages are young people who are hired to serve as support staff for the U.S. House of Representatives. They come to Washington to work, live and study as Pages. Pages are housed in the House Page Residence Hall and take classes in the House Page School. Pages report to work after classes, delivering correspondence, legislative material and packages within the Capitol complex, answering phones and assisting Members of Congress. Pages in the spring term serve from January 25th to June 4th.

Students who are interested in applying should write a 500-word essay entitled "Why I Would Like to Serve as a Page in the U.S. House of Representatives." The essay, along with a short information sheet and three letters of recommendation from school officials, community or religious leaders, must be received by November 21st in Etheridge's Raleigh Office at 225 Hillsborough Street, Suite 490, Raleigh, NC 27603. Complete details on applying are available on Etheridge's website at www.house.gov/etheridge or by calling 1-888-262-6202.

Essays will be reviewed by an outside panel of educators, government officials and local leaders to select Etheridge's nominee.
