Sara Lang Etheridge Marks 60th Anniversary of
D-Day on the Shores of Omaha Beach
WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) will travel to Normandy this week to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landing. Etheridge will join President Bush, European leaders and veterans for special ceremonies paying tribute to the American and Allied forces who landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. "As the victors of World War II pass from the scene, this anniversary
presents one of our last chances to observe the enormity of their accomplishments,"
Etheridge said. "I am personally honored to have this opportunity
to pay tribute to the sacrifices of our troops and our allies in the cause
of freedom. The debt owed to our troops who landed on the beaches of Normandy
and to the Greatest Generation is immeasurable. They saved the world from
tyranny and built the foundation of modern America. As our troops and
our nation continue to fight the war against terrorism, it is fitting
that we remember the sacrifices that built the legacy of freedom and unity
we hold dear." On Saturday Etheridge will attend a special ceremony honoring the Airborne Operation, including the 82nd Airborne. On Sunday he will join the President and other officials for a ceremony at Omaha Beach, and will visit the World War II Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial overlooking Omaha Beach. Etheridge will then mark the day with European leaders and officials at an international ceremony at Aromarches. The landing at Normandy included over 5,000 ships, 11,000 airplanes, and over 150,000 service men. Sixteen million Americans served in the military during World War II. Millions more played vital roles in the war effort from the homefront. More than 400,000 gave their lives in combat. Today, there are more than 134,000 World War II veterans in North Carolina. |
