Etheridge Statement on
No Child Left Behind Act

U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington), the only former chief state schools officer serving in Congress issued the following statement today in response to the President's Rose Garden ceremony celebrating the progress made towards the No Child Left Behind Act.

"Today the President held a Rose Garden event celebrating the No Child Left Behind Act. But education is about more than photo ops and fancy rhetoric, it's about doing what's right for our children.

"When NCLB was debated in Congress, the Administration repeatedly promised to provide the funds necessary to make education reform work. Unfortunately, those promises - to Congress, to the states and to North Carolina's children - have been broken.

"The fact is that the President's budget for this year falls $9.7 billion short of the funds promised under NCLB. Over the first three fiscal years of the law, the Administration has underfunded NCLB by almost $20 billion. Those cuts have turned the promise of NCLB into a cruel joke on the children of this country. States and local school districts are struggling to comply with NCLB regulations amid a crushing budget crisi while being shorted promised resources.

"As the only former state schools chief serving in Congress, I will fight these education cuts every step of the way."
