Etheridge Receives National Guard Medal of Honor

RALEIGH - With over one hundred members of the National Guard in attendance, U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today received the National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) Charles Dick Medal of Honor at a ceremony at the National Guard Armory. The medal was established in 1988 and is designed to recognize the contributions to the National Guard by elected representatives to legislative bodies at the state and national levels.

"I am deeply honored to receive this outstanding award in recognition of my work on behalf of the citizen soldiers of North Carolina's National Guard," Etheridge said. "The National Guard has a strong history of protecting our nation and our hometowns in times of disaster, war and distress. When America faces challenges, these heroes never fail to answer the call. With more than 2,600 of the nearly 12,000 soldiers and airmen of the N.C. National Guard having served on active duty since 9/11/01, the Guard continues to do its part every day to protect our nation."

The medal is named in honor of Major General Charles Dick, president of the National Guard Association of the United States from 1902 to 1909, a major general in the Ohio National Guard, a Congressman and later a Senator. Dick was responsible for the passage of the Dick Acts of 1903 and 1908 that established the foundation of the modern National Guard.

Etheridge, an Army veteran, has been a strong supporter of the National Guard in Congress and in North Carolina. Recently, he unveiled a virtual "Reservist Support Center" on his website at www.house.gov/etheridge to provide information and support for National Guard members and reservists when they are called to active duty. The site serves as a one-stop informational portal for troops and their families on health care, life insurance, employee rights, family support services, reservists' pay, education benefits and retirement procedures.
