Etheridge Reminds Constituents About National 'Do Not Call' Registry

North Carolinians Can Sign Up Via Phone, Web Site

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today reminded North Carolinians that they can now sign up for the new national "Do Not Call" registry at www.donotcall.gov or toll-free at 1-888-382-1222. The National Do Not Call Registry, which is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) gives consumers an opportunity to limit the telemarketing calls they receive by requiring telemarketers to remove numbers on the registry from their call lists. The registry will go into effect on October 1st for consumers who register before September 1st.

"This new national registry puts authority in the hands of consumers to reclaim their phone numbers," Etheridge said. "The Do Not Call list represents a step toward allowing North Carolinians to enjoy a peaceful home environment free of unwanted telemarketing solicitations. I hope my constituents will use this list to take back control of their telephones."

Placing a number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most, but not all, telemarketing calls. Consumers may still receive calls from political organizations, charities, telephone surveyors or companies with which they have an existing business relationship.

The FTC will not allow private companies or other such third parties to "pre-register" consumers for the National Do Not Call Registry. Web sites or phone solicitations that claim they can or will register a consumer's name or phone number on a national list - especially those that charge a fee - are a scam. Consumers are able to register directly, or through some state governments, but never private companies. The National Do Not Call Registry is a free service of the federal government.
