Etheridge Announces $150,000 for Chatham County Partnership for Children's Safe Start

WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-Lillington) today announced that he has secured $150,000 in federal funding for the Chatham County Partnership for Children's Safe Start Demonstration Project. Safe Start was begun in 1999 by the U.S. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) to reduce the impact of violence in the lives of young children. Chatham County was one of 11 sites chosen to implement the initiative for five years.

"This funding is great news for Chatham County," Etheridge said. "Children are our most precious resource and there is no better investment than our children. Safe Start plays a crucial role in protecting our children and ending the cycle of violence."

The funding was included in the Departments of Commerce and Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2006. The conference report must now be approved by the Senate, where it is expected to pass, and sent to the President to be signed into law.
