Washington, D.C. - Congressman Todd Akin (R-Mo) issued the following statement on the Anniversary of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.
"Today marks the fifth anniversary of the terror attacks of September 11. On that day American's were shocked by the total disregard for human life and the hatred of humanity harbored by the terrorists responsible for the act. Yet, also on that day the courage of first responders, many of whom also lost their lives as they attempted to save others, epitomized the American tradition of service and sacrifice.
"As we recognize the fifth anniversary, we cannot afford to forget that we have enemies willing to go to any length to kill as many innocent Americans as possible. Nor can we forget the courage and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform was they fight the war against terrorism. Soon after that attack, President Bush said that we would hunt down those responsible around the world. Although it has taken some years some key perpetrators are now in custody and will soon be facing the justice that they deserve. While al-Qaeda still exists, its capability has been greatly diminished as a direct result of our efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"As well as commemorating those who lost their lives five years ago at the world trade center, we should as a nation renew our resolve in combating terrorism and renew our vigilance against future attacks."
