Washington, D.C. - The United States House of Representatives passed a budget reconciliation bill that would reduce the deficit by nearly $50 billion by through reduced spending on some government programs. The Deficit Reduction Act narrowly passed early this morning by a vote of 217 to 215. Congressman Akin and a group of conservative Republicans have been strong supporters of the budget resolution.
“This budget resolution saves the American taxpayer $50 billion dollars and is consistent with the principle of fiscal responsibility,” said Akin. “By passing this resolution the House has rejected the notion that tax hikes are the panacea to our economic challenges.”
“Although more needs to be done to address the deficit and multi-trillion dollar debt, this is a good first step. Majority leader Roy Blunt and Speaker Dennis Hastert can be proud of advancing this legislation in the face of stalwart ideological opposition by those who believe that higher taxes are the answer to every problem,” said Akin.
