WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), who is a member of the House Armed Services Committee has been asked by the Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) to Co-Chair the important Gap Panel on Asymmetric and Unconventional Threats. This Panel is assessing future asymmetric warfare threats the U.S. Military will need to address. This includes threats to and our capabilities in information security and dominance, space, critical infrastructure and weapons of mass destruction.
The House Armed Services Committee is conducting a Committee Defense Review (CDR) that is running concurrently to the Pentagon’s legally mandated Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). The CDR should not be viewed as a competitor of the QDR. However, it will be an independent review of the process and provide a final document that will provide a unique policy, force structure and perspective by which to analyze the QDR.
“Being the father of a Marine Officer who has recently returned from serving in Fallujah, I understand how the decisions being made will not only address our National Security, but how individual soldiers will be equipped and prepared for the difficult and dangerous jobs that they do,” said Akin. “It will also be an opportunity to learn about and make detailed suggestions about the future of our country’s asymmetric capabilities.”
