Congressman Akin to Dedicate Valley Park Levee Saturday

Valley Park, Missouri- Valley Park, Missouri- Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) will join Mayor Dan Michel of the City of Valley Park and Colonel Kevin Williams, Commander of St. Louis District Headquarters of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in formally dedicating the nearly completed flood levee in Valley Park Saturday. They will speak at a ceremony following the annual Valley Days festival parade tomorrow.

“After over two decades of planning and work by the Army Corps, and just as many years of commitment by local leaders to the project, I am pleased to highlight that this important project is nearing completion, and will protect Valley Park from future Meramec River flooding,” Akin said. “Over the past several years, in tandem with Senators Bond and Talent, I have worked to provide funding for this project. I welcome the opportunity to announce that the current House version of this year’s Energy and Water Appropriations bill contains the funding to complete all construction.”

  • The project includes 3.2 miles of levee with 3 feet of freeboard above the 100-year profile;

  • Valley Park has been damaged by floods 14 times since 1915;

  • Many homes, businesses, City Hall and facilities of the Rockwood Public School District will be protected from future floods similar to the record flood of 1992.
