Statement on BRAC List

In response to the release of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) list, Congressman Akin (R-MO) a member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:

“Although the BRAC is necessary to increase efficiency and enhance national defense, I am extremely disappointed to see several of its recommendations. In particular, I believe the decision to realign the 131st Fighter Wing at Lambert Field is ill-advised. To remove this important fighter asset from its current location makes no sense from a homeland security perspective and is a recommendation which I oppose. For that reason, I am going to work with Sens. Bond and Talent and Gov. Blunt to make a strong case for the 131st during the BRAC public comment and review period.

“I am pleased with the news that Scott Air Force Base will remain open. It is tremendous news for the region economically and for assuring the continuation of Scott’s long and proud record of service.

“Scott Air Force Base helps to ensure that our military is able to rapidly and effectively project power around the world. The high quality of its personnel and commitment of the surrounding community, which has long supported the airbase and its personnel, is a true asset to our national defense.”
