Akin Says Energy Policy Act Will Advance America's Energy Independence

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The U.S. House of Representative passed legislation today that will help America become less dependent on foreign sources of energy, create jobs and boost our economy.

Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO), a member of the House Science Committee, praised the bill's passage and commented on the need for the U.S. Senate to send the much needed legislation to President Bush.

"A comprehensive and sensible American energy policy is essential if we are to meet the challenges of our future energy needs," said Akin. "Our dependence on foreign oil is expected to grow to 75 percent by 2010 if no significant action is taken to implement a common sense energy policy.

"By investing in new and affordable energy technologies as well as providing nuclear production tax credits and allowing for more energy exploration at home, the Energy Policy Act of 2005, once enacted, will start us down the road of greater energy independence and economic security.

"The House has passed similar legislation for the past several years. It is now time for Senate Democrats to allow an up-or-down vote on this legislation and stop preventing passage of an energy plan America needs. Energy affects every citizen, and escalating costs at the gas pump, home heating and in industry have to be curtailed. The Energy Policy Act is the right place to start," Akin concluded.
