Washington, D.C. - Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) today voted in support of a constitutional amendment that would protect traditional marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
"I am pleased to rise today in support of the Marriage Protection Amendment," Congressman Akin stated as he spoke on the House floor. "Just last month, 71 percent of Missourians supported a State Constitutional amendment supporting traditional marriage, and I stand with my fellow Missourians."
H.J. Res. 106, which would amend the U.S. Constitution seeks to protect marriage from redefinition by judicial fiat and protects states from having to acknowledge same sex marriages recognized in other states.
"We didn't ask for this debate," said Akin. "Activist judges would deny children the rich advantages of mom and dad and our culture the foundation of traditional marriage. That cannot stand.
"It is becoming increasingly imperative for Congress to act to pass a Marriage Protection Amendment. Only by doing so can we inoculate against the corruption of the most basic and essential of all social institutions from judges foisting ill-informed and corrosive opinions on all states of the union."
