Congressman Akin Votes against Tax Increase
On Married Couples
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Todd Akin today voted for a measure that would prevent tax increases on 30 million married couples next year by permanently eliminating the marriage tax penalty permanent.
"We need to help married couples and their families, not penalize them with a higher tax rate," said Akin. "I have consistently supported tax relief to create a more robust economy and to stimulate long-term economic recovery. We have recently passed some very important and significant economic mile markers when it comes to job creation, business investment and overall growth. By making tax relief permanent, we can stay on that course and avoid slowing our economy just as it is revving up.
"The Democratic substitute bill would have raised taxes on upper-income earners, the very people who are helping to create jobs through their small- and mid-sized businesses. Raising taxes as the economy begins to take off makes no sense.
"Not acting to make tax relief permanent would be tantamount to enacting a huge tax increase that would be destructive to our national economy and inflict economic harm on married couples and their children. That's a course we should never take," Akin concluded.
