Akin Supports Fiscally Responsible Budget Resolution
Resolution reflects Akin's request for increased defense spending
Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) said that he will support House Concurrent Resolution 393, a budget resolution for Fiscal Year 2005 that is expected to be voted on later this evening. Akin said that the resolution "establishes a sound framework for fiscal responsibility, lower federal spending and a strong military."
"Our priorities are clear: A balanced federal budget, tax relief for families and the companies where they work, national defense second to none and much leaner federal government," Akin said. "Today's budget resolution sends an unmistakable message that Republicans take those priorities seriously.
"Every one of the Democratic alternative budgets increased taxes. None of them limited federal spending in a serious way. All of them limited defense spending too severely. By bringing forward a realistic budget proposal, Republicans are demonstrating faithful stewardship of the nation's economy, jobs and national defense," said the Congressman.
Akin took a leading role in opposing proposed reductions in defense spending. A member of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), in February the Congressman joined with 36 other HASC members in signing a letter to the chairman of the House Budget Committee stating that signers of the letter "will not support a budget resolution that provides for less than the President's request of $420.7 billion for the national defense." This letter had a decisive effect in ensuring that the President's proposal for defense spending was sustained.
