Congressman Akin Responds to Campaign Finance Ruling
Washington, DC- Commenting on the United States Supreme Court's decision upholding major portions of the new campaign finance restrictions that were signed into law last March, U.S. Rep. Todd Akin said today that, "This decision in effect chills free speech and is a misguided attempt at reform. Abridgement of speech is never reform."
Akin continued, "By prohibiting some forms of political speech during a specific calendar period the new campaign finance restrictions will protect candidates from criticism by those who have organized as groups seeking to participate in the political process.
"Muzzling the voice and opinions of legitimate political groups and the hundreds of thousands of members that they represent will degenerate the tone and character of politics and is a dangerous erosion of free speech.
"It is my hope that the American people will demand a repeal of these restrictions when the unintended consequences of this legislation become more fully known."
