Akin Says Iraq Supplemental is Investment in America's Future
Washington, D.C.- U.S. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) said that the Supplemental Appropriations for Iraq being debated today in the U.S. House of Representatives "is an investment in the long-term security of our country."
The supplemental funding will support the efforts of the United States military as it continues its mission in Iraq and Afghanistan. A portion, roughly $20 billion, of the supplemental will be used to help build key parts of Iraq's infrastructure.
"By approving this request, Congress will reaffirm our nation's commitment to the war against terrorism and the building of a democratic Iraq," said Congressman Todd Akin, member of the House Armed Service Committee. "Our troops deserve and need this support, and every dollar spent represents an investment in our nation's long term security. A free and secure Iraq means less tension in the Middle East and less likelihood of conflict throughout the region. That's of great significance to the security of the United States and our vital national interests.
"This wartime supplemental is critical for a winning exit strategy, one that will lead to a safe, secure and democratic Iraq," Akin said. "Iraq is central to our war on terrorism and the resources we spend there ultimately defer a much far greater expense of leaving terrorism unchecked. It is far more effective and less expensive to fight terrorists in Iraq than to fight them at home."
