Akin Votes to End Partial Birth Abortion
Washington, D.C.- By a vote of 281-142, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to approve the conference report for Senate Bill 3, which makes illegal partial birth abortion. "This important legislation makes illegal the brutal act of killing a child minutes before it is born," said Congressman Todd Akin (R-MO) a cosponsor of the legislation. "This bill now moves to the Whitehouse where it will finally be signed into law, something which did not happen under a previous administration."
"We can close the page on the nightmare of partial-birth abortion," stated Akin during floor debate. "And we can once again reaffirm those truths that we stand by, that there are basic rights given to all mankind everywhere by our God and that the most basic right of any government is to protect the life that precious life made in the image of our Creator, the life of our children."
Partial-Birth abortion is a procedure in which a baby is partially delivered, is killed by having its skull punctured, has its brain vacuumed out, and is then extracted from the birth canal. The procedure is typically performed after the baby can survive outside of the womb. The procedure is generally considered unethical and has been declared to be medically unnecessary by the American Medical Association.
