Highway Bill Delayed
Temporary measure to fund Missouri’s priorities
Washington, D.C.- This week, the six year reauthorization bill for federal funding of highway projects has been put on hold while a temporary measure is expected to maintain highway funding for the next six months.
Congressman Akin released the following statement regarding the six month funding plan:
“It is very disappointing that we were not able to meet to meet this deadline for such an important piece of legislation. It is a high priority that we pass the reauthorization as soon as possible.
“Under the agreement, existing projects will continue until the full six-year authorization can be completed. Also, I will continue to seek funding for priority projects in the 2nd District like Phase Two of the Page Avenue Extension, continued improvements to the Hwy 44 corridor through Fenton, improvements to Hwy 141 to Ladue and others.
“While I am confident that this temporary measure will ensure that current improvements to area transportation projects will not be affected, it is essential that the 108th Congress is diligent in the completion of the reauthorization bill and thereby ensuring that future improvements to our Nation’s transportation infrastructure are funded.”
The current authorization for funding, TEA-21 is set to expire September 30th of this year. Differences between Senate and House versions made it unlikely that an agreement would be reached by the end of this month, but an extension of the existing authorization will continue funding at levels that will allow the continuation of current work on existing projects.
