Boeing Wins Small Diameter Bomb Contract
Washington, D.C.- Today, the United States Air Force awarded Boeing a contract to develop a Small Diameter Bomb (SDB), a precision guided weapon which can strike from a range greater than 40 miles.
Boeing won the contract over competitor Lockheed-Martin both of which companies had developed and demonstrated prototypes. The $188 million three-year contract is for refining Boeing's proposal and further development. Production of the SDB is set for 2005 with an anticipated $2.5 billion in sales to the USAF. The SDB will be produced at Boeing's St. Charles facility over the next ten years.
"This is great news for St. Louis, and for the United States Air Force," said Akin. "Boeing has a very proud history of producing some of the finest weaponry ever used by the United States military. The smart munitions produced at the St. Charles plant were critical to our successes in Afghanistan and Iraq."
"This smaller system will deliver a powerful package at long distances," said Akin. "The accuracy of this munition will allow us to lessen the loss of innocent life and damage to property while conducting military operations."
