House Passes Election Reform Bill
Measure will provide assistance to establish minimum standards to ensure fair elections
Washington- Thursday, the U.S.House of Representatives passed the Help America Vote Act. The bill provides aid to the States in order to immediately upgrade and improve the administration process of federal elections, including the training of poll workers and increased voter education material and anti-fraud provisions. According to the bill, first-time voters must provide proof of identity and States are required to maintain accurate voter registration records.
“This bill will help States administer fair elections, and even more importantly make it harder for those who would cheat the process to cast an illegal ballot,” stated Akin. “The right to free and fair elections is one of our most sacred rights, and is the foundation of a free society.”
“The anti-fraud provisions that were championed by Senator Bond, have been worth fighting for and will help to address some of the blatant violations experienced in St. Louis during the 2000 elections,” said Akin.
