Statement By Congressman Todd Akin Regarding Iraq Resolution
Washington, D.C.- Congressman Todd Akin has released the following statement regarding the resolution authorizing the use of military force against Iraq:
“If not enforced, resolutions alone cannot safeguard against the threat of Saddam Hussein’s growing arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.
“Saddam has attempted to dominate his region through brutal military force, has an abysmal history of human rights violations, has used chemical weapons against his enemies, including his own people, and has systematically ignored 16 United Nations Resolutions.
“Saddam continues to advance his chemical and biological weapons programs and may be close to building his first nuclear weapon.
“Authorizing the use of America’s military is one of the most sobering and difficult decisions Congress has the responsibility of deliberating. Yet, providing for the common defense is the highest duty with which Congress is charged. I support the Resolution authorizing the use of military force to ensure that Iraq does not and will not in the future possess chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.
“A credible threat of enforcement through military action is the only hope for Iraq’s compliance with Security Council resolutions, and is the only real hope for eliminating the threat that Saddam poses to our nation and the world.”
