Akin Attends Ceremonial Joint Session of Congress in New York
New York- Today, Congress convenes at Federal Hall in New York. The ceremonial session will memorialize the victims and heroes of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Congress last met in New York 212 years ago. Congress held its first and second sessions in New York, with the second session ending on Aug. 12, 1790. Prior to that New York had hosted the Congress that had operated under the articles of Confederation from 1785 to 1789.
Congressman Akin released the following statement:
“It is fitting that Congress convenes in a historic joint session in New York to honor the victims and heroes of last September 11th.
“As Americans, we need to remember not only the shock and horror of that we felt that day, but also the courage of the heroes that selflessly risked and sometimes lost their lives in trying to save others.
“The sacrifices of these heroes serve as a tribute to the spirit of our great nation and as a sober reminder of the responsibility we face in continuing to prepare for any future attacks and our prosecution of the war against terrorism.”
