House Passes Partial-Birth Abortion Ban
Akin is co-sponsor of bill
St. Louis, Mo.- Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a ban on partial-birth abortion. Congressman Akin is a co-sponsor of the bill.
Partial-birth abortion is a procedure in which a baby is partially delivered, is killed by having its skull punctured, has its brain vacuumed out, and is then extracted from the birth canal. The procedure is typically performed after the baby can survive outside of the womb. The procedure is generally considered unethical and has been declared to be medically unnecessary by the American Medical Association.
“What we have passed is a real and meaningful ban of a procedure that is a brutal murder of an innocent child shortly before its birth,” stated Akin. “This bill takes what reasonable people agree is wrong, immoral and unethical and makes it, as it should be, illegal.”
Congress has twice passed a partial-birth abortion ban, and each time the ban was vetoed by President Clinton. Although the House voted to override the vetoes, the Senate failed to do so.
Congressman Akin noted that the prospects for a partial-birth ban are much brighter under the current administration. “If passed by the Senate, which it has been twice before, I am certain the President will sign the bill,” stated Akin.
