Akin Supports Permanent Marriage Tax Relief
Senate rejected permanent death tax repeal
Washington, D.C.- Today, the U.S.House of Representatives voted 271-142 to offer permanent relief from the marriage penalty. Congressman Todd Akin voted in favor of the measure. According to the Heritage Foundation, over 70,000 married couples in the 2nd Congressional District receive a substantial tax break with over 20 million benefiting nationally.
Because of Senate procedural rules, the Economic Growth and Tax Reconciliation Act will expire after December 31, 2010. The act includes the marriage and death tax repeal.
“To penalize marriage is counter productive and wrongheaded,” said Akin. “Marriage is a cornerstone of our society-- it should be encouraged not taxed.”
Last Thursday, the House voted to make the death tax repeal permanent. Yesterday, Senate Democrats defeated a permanent repeal of the death tax.
“Last week, I voted for and the house passed a measure to make permanent the repeal of the death tax,” said Akin. “It is unfortunate that Senate Democrats, including Senator Carnahan, are holding permanent tax reform hostage.”
“If congress does not act, the nation will be looking at a historic tax increase in 2011,” said Akin. “Americans now face a heavy tax burden, where many daily activities are taxed. Marriage and death should not also be taxed.”
